RATINGS
I know we are all really worried about the ratings - so how do they work?
TV Show ratings in the U.S are provided by Nielsen. They are unable to monitor the entire U.S population so they have chosen a variety of households throughout the U.S. to monitor. (If figures are correct 22,000 households are sampled to guess the viewing habits of 115 MILLION households....although these numbers vary from source to source) These are called "Nielsen Families". What they watch then provides a sample that is used to determine what they believe the rest of the U.S is watching. Small devices called "Set Meters" are connected to their televisions. These devices gather the viewing habits of the home and transmit the information nightly to Nielsen through a "Home Unit" connected to a phone line. This covers what they watch "LIVE" and then the stats get updated again (up to 7 days later) to include what was recorded and played back on their DVR's - this is why overnight results are not always the most important as we know that people lead busy lives and with the huge choice of shows available to watch they can't all be watched live.
This means that ONLY "Nielsen Families" watching the shows can have an impact on BATB ratings - yes I know it's unfair but that's the system so we have to live with it. We have no way of knowing who is a member of a Nielsen Family so we just need to keep spreading the word in the hope of reaching more of them and find other ways to help The CW/CBS make money from BATB - this after all is what it is all about!
See lower down this page for examples of the best way to watch online and help support BATB.
Check out this article from TV Line earlier this year which shows that the Network does take online (digital) views into account alongside ratings and social presence when deciding on renewal. (Thanks to http://batbcw.tumblr.com/)
CW Network president Mark Pedowitz said in a statement. “Not only do Arrow, Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries perform well on-air, they’re also extremely successful for us both digitally and socially. I’m thrilled to have all three shows returning to our schedule next season"
Check out this great well written article from TvRepublik that explains how you can help.

Watch Online via The CW website
|
The Network sees just how many people are watching each of their shows online on their website. Each episode can be viewed the day after airing. The more views each episode gets the more money they can make from advertisers - so lets show The CW that BATB is their MOST loved show! Rewatch the episode as many times as you can via this method.
If you are outside the U.S you will need to use something to give you an U.S IP address before accessing The CW website.
Hotspot Shield and AnonymoX (For Firefox or Google Chrome) are both free. Tunnelbear is also great and gives you 1500mb free usage or unlimited usage for just $7 per month ($4 if commit to 12 months) Just Google for other options.

Watch Episodes on HULU!
|
The CW have an agreement with hulu to air their shows and again make money from the advertising here so this is another way you can watch the show (over & over again!) and support the Network.
If you are outside the U.S you can get a free app called Hola Unblocker (available for a variety of browsers) https://hola.org/
